Beau Rathburn's MO State Track Championship Race Report

Darrell O'Quinn's BMW River Gorge Race Report

Allanti Omnium - TN State Road Race Championship (08.02-08.03.08)

Road Race
The racing kicked off Saturday morning in what was already proving to be a very hot day.  The P/1/2 road race called for 5 laps of a very hilly 15 mile course.

Michael Lanham (pictured above) was able to escape from the pack and solo in for the victory!  Lanham has had some great results the past few weeks and this was an excellent win.

Sam Silvey, depite being hit in the head by a beer bottle that was tossed from an oncoming car, was able to win the group sprint for 4th place, as well as the Cat 1 Tennessee State Road Race Title.  Silvey wasn't seriously injured, but said the impact did jam his neck.

It's hard to believe that someone would risk potentially killing a person just because they had to slow up as a race went by.

The Masters 30/40 field saw Darrell O'Quinn and John McLauchlin toe the starting line on what would turn out to be an excellent ride for both racers.  Darrell put in a great effort.  One rider managed to get away from Darrell's breakaway group, but he was still able to win the group sprint and take second place on the day.  Johnny-Mac was not far behind, finishing a few spots back but in front of the rest of the 40+ riders making him the Tennessee Road Race State Champion!  Great work to both of them.

Bryant Funston raced without team support in the Cat 3 field in what proved to be a very difficult day.  A group of five managed to get away from the field with about 6 miles left in the race.  Bryant attacked from about a mile to go in an attempt to catch the breakaway group, but came up short and finished in 8th place.
Time Trial
Silvey and Lanham had to take off to prepare for Elite Nationals, so there were just three Marx and Bensdorf riders remaining.

The course was tough, and the temperature even tougher as the riders set off on the rolling 10 mile course.

Darrell O'Quinn put in a great TT, finishing in second place and showing that he was going to be a force in the Omnium Overall.

John McLauchlin, although not feeling extremely great after the road race, was still able to put in a time that left him in contention for a podium in the Overall as well.

Bryant Funston suffered over the hilly terrain, pedaling his way to a 5th place finish.
Crit
Sunday's crit was made for the power riders.  The course was pretty wide open and relatively flat which was a nice change of pace after Saturday's racing.

With Darrell sitting high in the overall, John went off the front with two other breakaway companions which allowed Darrell the luxury of sitting in while the other omnium overall hopefulls chased.  With John putting is some huge efforts in the breakaway, his group was able to lap the field.  When it came down the the finish, John was able to outsprint his fellow breakaway members for the victory!

Knowing that John's group was not going to be caught, Darrell took advantage of the opportunity to spring away from the pack and solo the last ten minutes of the crit on his way to a 4th place finish.

The weekends results put Darrell O'Quinn into 1st place in the Overall and John McLauchlin in 2nd.  It doesn't get any better than that.  Both guys rode extremely well and definitely deserved those results.

Bryant, inspired by John's successful breakaway in the Masters race, decided to try a breakaway of his own.  He launched an attack ten minutes in and bridged up to one rider who was already off the front.  There was also a rider who jumped on his wheel as he bridged across, and the three began setting a  hard tempo to establish the break.

The breakaway succeeded, however Bryant was unable to get the better of the two other riders in the break.  His third place finish was good enough to bump him into 2nd place overall for the weekend.

Bull's Gap Time Trial (07.27.08)

A few of the Marx & Bensdorf guys headed over to the Bull Gap Time Trial to partake in what many consider the "Race of Truth."  The truth ended up being told by Mike Olheiser, as he powered his way to a new course record.  When the clock stopped and the math was finished, Mike ended up annihilating the previous record of 10 years by over 5 minutes.

Mike wasn't the only one to show solid form on the day, as Marx & Bensdorf riders secured the 4th, 5th, and 6th place spots in the Cat 1/2/3 division.  Final results and times below:
  • 1st - Michael Olheiser - 48:27 - New Course Record
  • 4th - Michael Lanham - 55:55
  • 5th - Travis Sherman - 56:16
  • 6th - Jay McElroy - 57:23
Nice work to all of you!!

SCCC State Chapmionship Road Race & Crit (07.19-07.20.08)

Road Race
Olheiser had another great weekend of racing, winning the State Road Race on Saturday.  Brent Thompson, after attacking from the gun and staying away until the final lap climb, came home with a 5th place finish.  Darrell O'Quinn (8th) and John McLauchlin (9th) produced Top 10 results as well.

Criterium
Sunday's P/1/2 Crit saw the mercury rise as road temperatures reached triple digits.  Thompson continued with his aggressive ways from the day before, again launching an attack from the start.  This breakaway was swallowed up a few laps later and a prime lap saw Mike Olheiser and Matt Winstead (Team Inferno Pro Cycling) get a gap on the field.

The peleton chased with Lanham, McLauchlin, O'Quinn, Lamp, and Thompson covering moves, but the horsepower off the front was too much for the field to bring back.  Olheiser and Winstead sprinted out the finish, with Winstead barely beating Mike at the line.  Michael Lanham put in an excellent effort to finish up in third place.

The pack behind consisted of numerous small groups, making the scoring of results difficult due to riders being on different laps.  Brent Thompson ended up being scored with a 10th place finish.

Masters National Road Race Championships (07.02.08)

Mike Olheiser has done it for the third time, taking home the Stars-and-Stripes as winner of the Masters National Road Race Championship.  He also placed 4th in the Individual Time Trial.  Excellent work Mike!!

Marx & Bensdorf/Smith & Nephew Gran Prix (06.29-06.30.08)

Road Race
Sam Silvey started the home race off on the right foot, edging out Nathan Brown for the win in the Pro/1/2 Road Race.  They sprinted it out after being in a two-man breakaway for most of the day.  Mike Olheiser finished kept things rolling by winning the field sprint for 3rd place.  Following close behind him was Darrell O'Quin who placed well in 6th.  Clark Butcher also had a Top 10 showing, finishing up with an 8th place.

Brent Thompson again proved he's one of the fastest finishers around, surging past Scott Barnes from Mercy Cycling for the win in the Masters Road Race.  Beau Rathburn and John McLauchlin were both right there as well, finishing up 7th and 8th respectively.  Russ Griffin came in 10th, giving Marx & Bensdorf 4 of the Top 10 finishers.

Greg Casals almost made it a clean sweep for Marx & Bensdorf until the heat and humidity caught up to him in the four man breakaway he was in. He ended up finishing fourth overall in the Cat 3's, just behind winner Patrick Harkins from NashvilleCyclist.

Unfortunately, there was a huge crash in the main group of the Cat 3 field as the pack rushed towards the finishing sprint at over 30 miles an hour.  Caught up in the wreck were Joseph Welsh, Rick Carpenter, and Bryant Funston.  The wreck ended up putting Carpenter in the hospital with four broken ribs, a broken clavicle, and a partially collapsed lund.  We all wish him a speedy recovery.

Time Trial
The Saturday evening time trial saw Michael Olheiser take first place in the P/1/2 division.  Travis Sherman finished two spots behind Mike for 3rd place.

Other Top-10 finishes in the P/1/2 division were:
  • Michael Lanham - 6th
  • Sam Silvey - 7th
  • Ryan Heydenrych - 8th
  • Darrell O'Quinn - 9th
  • Clark Butcher - 10th.

In the Masters race, John McLauchlin put in a great time to finish in first place.  Beau Rathburn also rode well to finish in 5th place.

The Cat 3 race saw Bryant Funston and Greg Casals race to 5th and 6th place respectively.

Criterium
Olheiser again showed his time trialing strength as he motored away from the group on his way to lapping the majority of the field and assuing himself 1st place.  Clark Butcher rode clear of the main pack finish in a very strong 3rd place.  Stuart Lamp secured 10th place on the day.

The Masters race featured an early breakaway and multiple chase groups.  Russ Griffin (5th), Brent Thompson (6th), and John McLauchlin (10th) all finished in the top ten.

Greg Casals rode well in the Cat 3 group to finish in 5th place.

Omnium results will be posted once they become available.

Edgar Soto Memorial Criteriums (06.14-06.15.08)

Friday night saw Beau Rathburn burn around the track with the second fastest time of the day, more than good enough for the Masters 1 Kilometer Time Trial win.  He was edged out by less than a second by Spencer Beamer.  Bryant Funston and Greg Casals placed 2nd and 3rd respectively in the Cat 3 field.

On Saturday, Michael Olheiser crushed the Masters field, going solo from the gun until he lapped the pack for the crit victory.

Bryant Funston, after scraping himself off the ground from a wreck, went off the front with about 12 laps to go in the crit.  He was joined by a TriStar rider and the two shared pulls until the end.  Funston ended up outsprinting his breakaway partner for the win.  Greg Casals covered moves from at the front and finished 5th overall.

In the stacked Pro/1/2 field, Clark Butcher rode well in an extremely fast race to finish 13th.

Sunday saw Mike Olheiser again solo away from the pack to win the crit.  Bryant Funston was also able to break away from the field on the last lap in the Cat 3 race to win by a few seconds.
